North of the Dordogne River, the Périgord vert is a real green gem with rolling hills and a great number of rivers. Owing to its geographical situation, the climate is very mild, which makes being there pleasant at all seasons. Our trip in the Nontron area will take us to Brantôme, named “the Venice of the Périgord”.
We will visit Puyguilhem castle, Villars caves, Varaignes museum, troglodytic dwellings, Bourdeilles castle.
Day 1: Arrival at the Périgueux railway station at the end of the afternoon. Transfer by minibus to Brantôme around 6.30.

Day 2: Departure on horseback at around 10. We’ll ride through Brantôme, before going into the green landscapes of Périgord vert. We’ll go by the old Cistercian abbey of Bashaud. Night in St Pierre de Côle at a typical country house bed and breakfast. Dinner on site.

Day 3: Departure around 10, to reach the beautiful village of St Jean de Côle; we’ll ford the river and ride through the village. Picnic at the Villars caves and visit. A long afternoon ride to our evening stop in St Saud Lacoussière; we are now close to the Massif Central, and the houses are built in granite stone. Night and dinner in a hotel.

Day 4: Departure from St Saud Lacoussière around 9; it’ll be a cool morning in the Massif Central, we’ll see different landscapes, small lakes, pine forests; picnic in Augignac. In the afternoon we’ll ride through the village of Piegut, where we’ll see the 11th century keep. Arrival around 6 and night at a bed and breakfast farm near Bussière Badil.

Day 5:  Departure around 10 for the pretty village of Varaignes and its museum-within-castle of Tisserand which we will visit. Picnic by the stream at the foot of the village. Afternoon among hills where we’ll ride on beautiful lanes, making pleasant canters possible. Arrival at the Auccor castle (privately owned), where we’ll corral the horses; then we’ll go to our hotel to have a candlelit gourmet dinner.

Day 6: Departure around 10. Through woods in the morning we’ll reach the Mareuil castle (one of the 4 Périgord baronies). We’ll share a picnic in St Pardoux de Mareuil, a small village on top of a hill built above troglodytic dwellings called “cluseaux”. We’ll visit them after the meal. Afternoon in open spaces, nice lanes good for canters. Night in a hotel in Monsec.
