Equestrian farm les abrons the basque country the smuggler's road
A typical area with mysterious origins, a place of traditions and secrets. A charming area with beautiful towns and villages, and white-washed painted half-timbered houses. The Basque mountain is a place of ever changing green meadows.
We’ll start at St Jean Pied de Port, a walled city built by Vauban: it is the last French leg on the journey for the St Jacques de Compostelle pilgrims. Then we’ll continue on mountain ridges to reach Urepel, then the towns of St Etienne de Baïgorry, Aïnhoa, Sare, and the end of the trip will be in the mountains at the Ibardin Pass (view on the Atlantic Ocean).
Day 1:  We’ll welcome you at the end of the afternoon at the SNCF station of St Jean Pied de Port. Transfer and night at a bed and breakfast. For those coming by car, we’ll meet you at the Dona Maria guest house.

Day 2:  St Jean Pied de Port – Espila.
9 o’clock : morning visit of St Jean Pied de Port. Departure on horseback around 10, to reach the mountain ridges little by little. Up in the mountains it’s a beautiful view and we’ll have picnic among sheep and cows. After picnic, departure for the Espila guest house by way of mountain ridges. Dinner on site, night at a bed and breakfast –  small dormitory.

Day 3: Espila – Urepel.
Departure around 9.30. Still on ridges, along the Spanish border we’ll have picnic at the Lindus Pass. There we’ll go and see a redoubt, a stronghold on the border line, which was in service during the 1793 war against the Spanish. Then we’ll go down to the small village of Urepel. We’ll have a walk in the village to see the typical houses, the Basque pelota field. Night at a guest house.

Day 4: Urepel – Le Cayolar Gaintza
Departure around 9.30, we’ll leave Urepel by the Aduldes valley. Picnic in this small typical Basque village. We’ll go back through the Pays Quint, a certified Spanish area which has been granted a perpetual lease to the people of the valley; these are considered as French citizens abroad; we’ll certainly see Potock horses that live on the range in the mountains. Night in a hotel.

Day 5: Le Cayolar Gaintza – Bidarray
Departure around 9.30. In the mountain we’ll reach the village of St Etienne de Baïgorry, by way of the Ispeguy Pass, where we’ll see a Spanish venta. Picnic at St Etienne de Baïgorry, with a beautiful Basque chuch in a splendid village. Long after noon which will take us to Bidarray. Night in a hotel.

Day 6:  Bidarray – Aïnhoa
Departure around 9.30. We’ll ride over the Méhatché and Iguzkieguir passes. A picnic near cromlechs that shepherds think are Moorish , Roland de Roncevaux or Napoleonic warriors’ graves. Actually these cromlechs can be traced back 4000 years before Christ. The end of the day will be in Aïnhoa, one of the most beautiful villages in France.

Day 7: Aïnhoa – Sare
Departure around 9.30. After the beautiful village of Sare, we’ll follow the GR 10 along the Rhune scenic railway; the end of the trip will be at the Ibardin pass near Hendaye. Night in a venta.

Day 8: End of the trip. Transfer to the Bayonne SNCF station or airport after breakfast.
